Smash cake sessions are a lot of messy fun, and it’s become quite the trend! We dress your baby up, put them in a cute setup with a cake, and let them smash away! (Note: Even if your baby isn’t so interested in the cake, I’ve got some tricks to help them get them to dig into it!)
Planning your Baby’s Smash Cake Session
Reach out through the Contact Form, and I’ll send you my Welcome Guide. It’s best to schedule your little one’s cake smash session at least 2-3 months in advance to give me time to plan and order anything we need for the session. Once your contract and creative fee invoice are submitted, you can fill out my questionnaire to give us a starting point to customize the perfect session for your little one!
I’ll provide the setup (backdrop, decorations), a stand for the cake, wooden spoon for smashing, and outfit options from my client closet (or if you have a specific outfit in mind, you can bring your own).
The Smash Cake
To prevent issues with food allergies (eggs, dairy, wheat, etc), I ask my clients to provide the cake for their session. Here are some tips when selecting a cake:
Professional Bakery
Getting a smash cake from a professional bakery will ensure you have a beautiful, photogenic, moist cake with soft icing. Additionally, it will minimize stress for you leading up to the session.
Size
Six inches is the perfect size for a smash cake. It will fit on the cake stand and between baby’s legs.
Naked Cakes
Naked cakes photograph beautifully, and are very versatile to use with different themes and color schemes.
Avoid Chocolate
Chocolate isn’t the most photogenic when all smashed up. Additionally, it has a slightly bitter taste to it, so babies tend not to like the flavor at the first impression.
Avoid Vegetable Shortening
Shortening is pure fat, and not the best thing for your little one to be consuming. It is also likely to stain.
Avoid Fondant
It is beautiful, but it can be hard for little ones without many teeth to chew, which can pose a choking hazard. Additionally, fondant is harder for your baby to smash through the fondant to get to all that messy goodness!
Smash Cake Alternatives
There are many options as an alternative to cake for a first birthday session. Here are a few popular ideas:
- Donuts
- Watermelon
- Pasta
- Pancakes
Planning your baby’s smash cake session can be super fun, and I hope this has helped you. Feel free to continue browsing my website, and Reach Out whenever you’re ready to schedule.
