Well, I liked Rachel Hollis’s first book so much, I decided to check out the sequel! Here’s a Girl Stop Apologizing Book Summary and Review. This read is an empowerment book encouraging women to follow the ”what if..?” in their hearts. Rachel wants women to unapologetically be who they are and chase their dreams and goals instead of living for everyone else’s expectations.

Girl Stop Apologizing Book

This one is broken into 3 parts: 

  • Excuses (to let go of) 
  • Behaviors (to adopt) and 
  • Skills (to acquire)

Excuses

The “Excuses” section basically breaks down a bunch of common limiting beliefs that we have as women. Ideas like: “I don’t have time” or “I’m not good enough to succeed.” One of the ones that I struggled with for a long time is the idea that “I can’t pursue my dream and still be a good mom.” (Why couldn’t I have found this book like 5 years ago?!) These ideas are only true if you believe in them, and, frankly, they are each of us getting in our own way before we even really try.

Behaviors

The “Behaviors” section discusses the habits you need to be successful once you aren’t blocking yourself with your excuses. I found the 10 years, 10 dreams, 1 goal idea particularly useful. I love Rachel’s suggestion to write your dreams in the past tense (like they already happened) daily. I’ve created a page in my digital planner where I do just that (and can erase the handwriting every day to start fresh).

Skills

The “Skills” section isn’t necessarily what you would expect. If I asked you to list out skills you need for success, you probably wouldn’t say things like “Confidence,” “Positivity,” or “Planning.” I did love her approach to goal setting and planning by finding the “guide post” of what needs to happen right before you reach your goal that will guarantee success. Then work backward to define the mile markers to get you from where you are to where you want to go. This was also a cool one: brainstorm ways to approach a mile marker, then ask what one thing you can do immediately to make everything on your brainstorming list unnecessary, or to achieve all of it faster, easier, or more efficiently. 

Girl Stop Apologizing

There were lots of great nuggets of wisdom in this book! Honestly, I think I liked it better even than the first one. (I enjoyed her first book, too. You can read the review to Girl Wash Your Face.) I love that she encourages others to be true to themselves. Your goals don’t have to look like mine, or hers, or anyone else’s. I definitely recommend checking out the whole book for yourself!
